The Language of the Birds

Stories of flight, magic and transformation hosted by Genie Poretzky-Lee and RAW (Really Awesome Women).

“I want to sing like the birds sing, not worrying about who hears or what they think.” Rumi

For one night only, RAW (Helen Black, Ruth Steadman and Anna Walker) will be weaving together magical tales of talking birds, flight and transformation. There will also be a very special poetry reading by Rufus Walker-Park.

Genie will be exhibiting her series of woad blue monotypes, Language of the Birds, inspired by the mystical, secret and magical language that pervades folklore, myth and medieval literature and the epic poem The Conference of the Birds, by Sufi poet Farid ud-Din Attar. In medieval France, the language of the birds was a secret language of the Troubadours, connected with the Tarot. In Kabbalah and alchemy, the language of the birds was considered the key to perfect knowledge. In Norse mythology, the power to understand the language of the birds was a sign of great wisdom.
